It resists water<br \/>\nentry while remaining inert to gases and liquids that the cable may be exposed to during its service life. It<br \/>\nprovides a smooth, low friction surface for cable placement. The jacket must be made of a material that will<br \/>\nallow the cable to remain flexible and serviceable at all of the temperatures it will experience during its<br \/>\nlifetime.<\/p>\n<p>It must resist abrasion during installation. It must provide, along with the cable&#8217;s strength members, the<br \/>\nmechanical strength required to survive its environment and installation forces. For indoor cables, the<br \/>\njacket also provides the fire retardance required by building codes.<\/p>\n<p>Many different materials are available for cable jacketing making it possible to match the jacket material to<br \/>\nthe end user application requirements. The table below provides a listing of some of the more popular<br \/>\njacketing materials used for optical cables.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PE &#8211; 1 Polyethylene (MDPE \u2013 medium density PE \/ HDPE \u2013 high density PE)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Features<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Primary outside jacket material.<\/li>\n<li>Good resistance to UV (sun light) due to carbon black.<\/li>\n<li>Good flexibility over wide range of temperatures.<\/li>\n<li>Good abrasion and crack resistance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PVC &#8211; Polyvinyl chloride<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Features<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provides good mechanical protection.<\/li>\n<li>Flexible at normal installation temperatures.<\/li>\n<li>Flame retardant.(typical riser material)<\/li>\n<li>Used for many indoor applications.<\/li>\n<li>Can be protected against sunlight with various UV inhibitors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>LSZH &#8211; Low smoke, zero halogen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Features<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flame Retardant with low smoke and no halogenated materials<\/li>\n<li>For use in unventilated areas exposed to public, e.g., subways and tunnels.<\/li>\n<li>Good mechanical performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most Outside Plant optical cables are made from medium density or high density polyethylene with carbon<br \/>\nblack for UV stabilization. In North America the National Electric Code dictates that this type of a cable<br \/>\njacket cannot penetrate any building by more than 50 feet. A fire retardant, listed cable must be used for<br \/>\nindoor applications.
