Cabling Guide ④ | 800G/200G: Switch-to-Switch Structured MPO Connectivity Introduction

800G and 200G — Switch-to-Switch Applications

Using Structured Cabling to Connect MPO-8/12 APC to MPO-8/12 APC

This scenario uses MPO fiber trunk cables as the backbone for structured cabling. 400G optical modules support 200G transmission by using MPO-8/APC to 2*MPO-4/APC fiber conversion patch cords. A 1×2 MPO-8/APC multimode fiber patch cord can activate two of the four lanes inside a 400G optical module (i.e., 4 fibers out of the 8 fibers), effectively enabling the 400G module to operate as a 200G device. This solution is primarily used for interconnecting switches, such as connecting leaf nodes to spine nodes, and spine nodes to the core layer. This cabling method is recommended when the two active devices are physically located in different areas of the data center.
