Introduction to SFP-DD Optical Transceivers

SFP-DD is short for SFP Double Densty, it is a new module and cage/connector system similar to current SFP module, but with an additional row of contacts providing for a two lane electrical interface. It is being developed by the SFP-DD MSA as a key part of the industry’s effort to enable high-speed solutions. The product will support DAC cables, optical modules and AOC’s, both legacy SFP+ and new SFP-DD styles.

The Concept leverages QSFP-DD SMT with excellent SI, it eeduced board real estate and panel beach front as compared to zQSFP, the existing SFP+ cables, modules and AOC’s as well as new SFP-DD interfaces. it might with additional two lanes (4 port breakout, 2 lanes per port) to support future bandwidth upgrades demanding. In general, SFP-DD is a natural complement to QSFP-DD interfaces.

The SFP-DD optical interface port shall be either a male MPO receptacle or a dual LC. The recommended location and numbering of the optical ports for each of the Media Dependent Interfaces as follow:
